An Kindness of People We Don't Know: The Way a Person I Had Just Met Helped Me Obtain the Position That Changed My Life

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a friend. Since my companion was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in the Big Apple, we had arranged a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a large multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side known as International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the canteen, where we got some food, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Beside me was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He wanted to know what I did, and I explained that I had newly finished with a scientific background and had been performing experiments with electron microscopy.

He mentioned that there was an research lab at Columbia University – close to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I consider applying for a job with them. I dismissed the idea, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, even more importantly, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I toured the city, returning to the canteen that after dark. The man from Iraq came up to me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately informed my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where anything feels possible – she responded: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I was granted no-cost classes at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his identity, but his remarkable generosity altered my destiny in so many ways. I lacked the bravery or self-belief to contact anyone at an prestigious college and request employment. Moreover, I had always wanted to take classes in another country, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that role at the university resulted in a job in Zurich where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I now have a family of four kids. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.
